Elgin standout Simpson part of 2018 IBCA Hall of Fame class May 5th

Former Elgin Community College men’s basketball standout Sherick Simpson will be inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame May 5th at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena.

Simpson was a First Team all-Skyway selection during the 1994 and 1995 seasons. He was Skyway MVP in 1994 and All-American the following year.

Simpson, a 1993 graduate of Elgin Larkin High School, was a three-year varsity contributor on the Royals basketball team. His senior season, he averaged 20.9 points and 9 rebounds per game, earning him Upstate 8 Conference Player of the Year and All-State Honorable Mention honors.

After Elgin, Simpson played two years at Fort Hayes State University. The 1996 Tigers won the NCAA Division II National Championship with a 34-0 record. Simpson was the team’s second leading scorer at 14.6 points per game and being named to the All-Region Team.

He was also named the Elite 8 Tournament Outstanding Player and the Most Valuable Player of the NCAA Division II title game with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

In his senior year, Sherick led the team to a 29-2 record while being selected to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference First Team and NCAA Division II All-American First Team.

Simpson played professionally for over 10 years in various leagues in the United States, including the Elgin Racers of the International Basketball League and the Chicago Rockstars of the American Basketball Association. He also played professionally in Europe for teams in Holland and Portugal.

Simpson also is a member of the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame.
